October 22th 2020

Today, I got feedback from Mr. Paterson. Most of my mistakes were slide mistakes, such as font size, the lack of keywords, and the point that I sometimes used more than one photo in one slide.

First, for the font size, Mr. Paterson said "title 50+, subtitle section headings 40+, Content, Informations, Keywords 30+, credits 20-25". When I made this slide, I did not have these points on my mind, so I would like to remember this and use this when I have an opportunity to make the presentation slide. However, I thought 30+for the keywords are sometimes too small.

Second, my slide had a lack of keywords. I pasted a big photo, but I did not write any keywords, so that made the audience difficult to understand the main point of the slide.

The third point is that I sometimes used more than two photos in one slide. Mr. Paterson said pasting two photos in one slide, that makes the audience take time to understand the meaning of the slide, and concentrate on the presenter, speaking.

There were many improvements in my slides, so I want to improve this for the final draft.

October 20th 2020

Today, I thought about my preferences in the book. It was interesting listing my preferences. I like reading Mystery's story, in which the characters solve the incident and the complicated human relation, or a big secret. It is very enjoyable to find out the truth and makes me feel very excited. The book I chose "Never Let Me Go" is not a mystery story and not a genre that I like but I strongly enjoyed reading it. There were similarities to the mystery story that the reader is going to find out the big secret inside the story. I love to read books, so I thought I want to read many genres, and encounter many books.

October 6th 2020

Today, I listened to the presentation by new students. All of them were very good, that I can not believe that they came to this school recently. Asahi's presentation was very easy to understand, that he spoke slowly, and said each word clearly. I understood all of the things he pointed out and had an interest in his book. Rei's was fantastic that her speaking had inflection of volume and her temperature to the book has been conveyed. Not like me, just speaking what I decided to say in the same tone of voice, her presentation had the power to attract the audience to listen to her carefully. I finished presenting, but I want to copy her technique when I have an opportunity to have a presentation again.

Reflection of the presentation

I was very confident about presenting this term, compared to the previous presentation. It could have many reasons, such as being able to have time to listen to each other's presence in small groups and got advice, and I made enough time to practice the presentation. In reality, I am very happy with my presentation, even though I had plenty of improvement points about my actual skill of the presentation, and about my slide.

The first point is that I did not do much eye contact. When I watched the video of my presentation, I realized that I was not having eye contact with the audience, and keep looking at the slide. I was not aware that I am looking at the side during the presentation, and I forgot to be conscious about having eye contact when I was practicing the presentation. So, in the actual presentation, I unconsciously looked at the slide, instead of the audience. If I could have a chance to do the presentation again, I would practice having eye contact with the audience, without looking at the slide.

The second point is that I kept saying "umm..." during my presentation. When I looked at the video, I always said umm in each time I change the slide. This could annoy the audience, as I was annoyed when I was watching my video. I was also saying "umm" in the previous presentation, and this never improves. This could be because I spoke too fast, and to fill in the time, I keep using “umm”. So, I would like to be conscious about talking slower on the presentation.

The second point is that in my slide, I pasted a photo that matches the point that I want to say, but I did not write the keyword of my point, so it made the audience difficult to understand my point. There were many slides that I only pasted photos with no words, so maybe, I made the slide too simple.

There were many points that I need to enhance for my presentation, such as having eye contact, stop saying “umm..”, talk slower, and put keywords on my slide, not only the picture. However, I assert that my presentation got better compared to the one from the last year, so I am very happy about it. I would like to improve my presentation more and gain my presentation skills.

September 15th 2020

Today, I did my presentation, and by watching my video, I found many things that I need to improve from my presentation.

The first point is that I keep saying "um..." during my presentation. Almost every time that I change the slide, I was saying "um.." that annoys the audience. I want to stop saying those things, to make the audience concentrate on my presentation. The second point is that I was looking at the slide for a long time. The problem is, that I was not realizing that I am looking at the slide, and misunderstood that I was having eye contact with the audience. When I looked at my video, I was looking at the slide so much. I wasn't doing the practice without looking at the slide, so I thought it is important to practice in a similar situation to the real presentation.

However, there were many points that I enhanced compared to last year. As I practiced many times before the presentation, I was able to map the room in a natural way, and in an appropriate way. For example, I stood left when I was talking about human cloning, and I stood right when I was talking about our familiar life. Also, I was very confident when I start the presentation, as I practiced many times before it. I was strongly looking forward to having a presentation in front of the audience. Because I was confident, I was able to speak smoothly (maybe it was too fast), and fluently.

For the presentation slides, I think the slide became better compared to the last year. I searched for the photo that completely matches the content that I want to say, and makes the slide easy to understand for the audience. However, in some of the slides, I did not write the keyword so maybe, this made it sometimes difficult for the audience to understand the point.

Finally, I am very happy with my presentation because I got much better on it compared to the last year. I thought practicing is very important to be better on the presentation, so I would like to practice on it if I have another opportunity to have a presentation.  For this time, I felt the presentation is very fun and enjoyable, so I am looking forward to do some more of them.

September 10th 2020

Today was the second day of the presentation. All of them were good, and I learned many of the things to improve my presentation.

All of the presentations were good, and I found out that almost all of the presenters are not saying "umm..." or "like...". When I was practicing at home, I keep saying those things so I want to stop saying these things to make the audience stressless on hearing the presentation and concentrate on it.

I am looking forward to do my presentation.

September 8th 2020

Today was the first day of the presentation. I learned many things from the students who presented today, so I want to improve my presentation more.

There were many points that I learned in the presentation, first one is to map the room, and the second one is to write the reference properly. Most of the students moved around the front of the classroom that made me concentrate on the presenter, and don't make the presentation bored. I also had much eye contact with the presenters and this is one of the things that I can observe from them. Also, Mr. Paterson told us to write the reference properly. There were some of the mistakes in my presentation, so I fixed it that day.

Like this, there were many points that I learned from them. I want to observe many of the things, and enhance my presentation much better.

September 3rd 2020

Today, Migusa had her presentation practice, and we shared feedback with each other. Migusa's presentation was very enjoyable because she presented just like talking to the audience. She did not spoil the summary much, so I thought I would like to read that book. Also, I thought it is important to do eye contact and a phrase that appeals what I did before doing this presentation.

I had feedback that I spoiled the summary of the story too much. I thought the same thing too, but it was very difficult for me to tell the points to the audience that I really want to tell, without spoiling the ending of the story. However, to let the audience want to read this novel, it is essential to hide the endings, so I decided to change the thing to say in the summary to hide what actually happened in the story.

The feedback was very helpful for me to make the presentation better. Thank you to my teammates!

September 1st 2020

Today, I had a presentation practice. The teammate's presentation was all good, and it was very helpful to me to enhance my presentation. However, today, we did not have enough time to share feedback with each other, so I would like to do that in the next class.

For my presentation, I thought the time was too long, and I spoiled the story too much. Also, when I talked with my teammate later, I found out that she was misunderstanding the main point and the structure of the book, so I thought I should fix that point to tell how fantastic this novel is.

There were many good points having a presentation practice, and I thought I want this time before all of the presentations I should do.

August 27th 2020

My presentation took 10minuits, and I need to shorten it to six minutes. It takes time for me to explain the summary, and there were many things that I want to say in the conclusion, so it is hard to cut the points to say. However, it is essential to shorten it too, so today, I worked on shortening the essay. It was hard to choose points to explain in the story's summary and use limited words.

August 25th 2020

Today was the first class after Summer vacation.

There was plentiful time to work on the presentation during the summer, but I couldn't use the time fully. I worked on my essay and the slide on the last week of the vacation, so I am not remembering things to say in the presentation.

For the essay, it was difficult for me to clear all of the mistakes that the app (turn it in) gave to me, and there were some parts that I could not fully understand what is wrong about it.

I would like to practice the presentation for Thursday.

Reflection of the first term

Sorry, I realized that I forgot to push submission today.

This term became an unusual term because of the coronavirus. Because the new way of studying was unfamiliar to all of us, there were some anxieties and fear, but I think we somehow became used to this new style of education and utilize the trait it has. Also, in this term, I think my writing skill got better a little bit. I am very happy with my assessment of the Book Review essay, and I got a little bit of confidence in English writing.
For the beginning of the term, we used teams' video chat to have the class. It was unfamiliar for all of us, and it was a little bit weird that I am having the same class with classmates in a completely different place, and without seeing other's faces. The class was just like a class we have at school, but as we are having class at home, sometimes I could not concentrate enough, and relaxed too much in most of the classes. Because of this, there were some parts that I could not catch up, however, my friend thought me the point that I could not catch up. I am very pleased with my friends and feel sorry for annoying them. Also, I felt very lonely that I could not have class sitting next to my friends, and sometimes my motivation for the class decreased very much. however, there were also positive sides of having a class online. As I can use most of the time in a way that I want to use, I was able to take more time on my essay compared to last year. Of course, there was much homework from different subjects, but still, there was still plenty of time to work on the essay.
Last year, I had a goal to make my writing skill higher, and I think I achieved this goal a little bit. Maybe, it is because I had much time to work on it because the school was closed for a while, and I used the writing tools fully to improve my essay. However, before using the writing tools, especially the "lextutor", my essay was using only easy simple vocabularies, and the level was very low. It got better by using the writing tools fully, so I strongly realized that utilizing these convenient writing tools to improve the writing is an essential thing.
This term was a very unusual term. In May, we had classes at home alone, without facing each other, and also in June, only half of us could attend the class. It was very weird and uncomfortable for me, and my motivation to study was decreasing. I feel that having a class with all of my friends, and the fact that my friend is sitting next to me and having the same class, is an extremely happy thing and an essential thing for me. Although the way of having the class changed, we were able to have almost the same education from Mr. Paterson. Thank you for the meaningful class, and I am looking forward to having it next term.

July 28th 2020

Today, we used an app called the flip grid and took a video. I did not know the meaning of taking this video, but it was fun. I thought it was a fun app, but I do not actually know the real function the app has, so I want to learn about it more by using this app. I thought it is very annoying that the app asks for log in many times, and do not allow us to log in with google.

July 21st 2020

Today was the first class after submitting the essay. Mr. Paterson pointed out that we used many of the personal pronouns, and had some grammar mistakes. I am not good at grammar, but I used Grammarly to check, and my teammate pointed out some mistakes so I did not have any comments. However, I definitely think there are some mistakes in my essay too. Also, for the personal pronoun, I was not pointed out because I enhanced my sentences and change it to not use them.  Also, there were points that my teammate pointed out forme, and it was very helpful to me.
In the middle of the class, we were shown an essay from Mr.Paterson's university. The percentage of the quotation was high, and there were many quotes there. There wasn't a quotation mark, so turn it in do not recognize it is a quote. I thought it is essential to write a reference properly. Mr. Paterson said that even though the rest of the essay was perfect if the student did not write the reference properly, the assessment would be F because it means that the students are not writing that sentence.

July 7th 2020

Today, we were taught about the app called "turn it in". It was an app that can show the percentage of the words that students quoted from other writings. My writings were eight percent, but almost all of this was from the reference list. I thought this is a fantastic function which can find out that the students are quoting the other's writings. All school should use this when submitting their writings, to prompt them to considerate on writing originally.

June 30th 2020

Today, I looked up my book review, and I found my group members fixing my grammar, and the points I forgot to write. It was very helpful to me that there were many grammar mistakes that Grammarly did not point out. I am not good at checking grammars but I want to help other group members essays and give some advice as much as I can.

July 2nd 2020

Today, I fixed my book review using the AWL and the reading level. My AWL score was very low so It was very hard to replace the words, but I made the introduction 3.7 to about 7.1. There were many words that I did not know in the list, so I fully felt my lack of English vocabulary. However, finding synonyms are sometimes fun, so I want to increase my vocabulary.

23th June 2020

Today, we were introduced about the writing tools. I perfectly forgot about these websites and I checked this essay for the first time, and it was horrible.
I used the same words many times, such as "write" or "strong". I changed these words to more difficult words. Also, Umeno who was sitting next to me was using the grammary premium, and let me use this to improve my work. There were many grammar mistakes and simple words, so this made me an opportunity to fix all of those things. I thought these tools are very convenient that they can support us to write better. I want to improve the book review using these tools.
Also for the slides, I thought it would be easier for the audience to understand the summary of the book when the presenter explained it with the simple timeline. In my book, there were three main settings (Hailsham, cottage, and the hospital) so I want to explain the summary separating these three parts.
I am looking forward to look at other people's slide too.

18th June 2020

Today, we learned the points to make a good slide. The slide from the senpai's, which Mr.Paterson showed us was very easy to understand, as I can recognize some of the information from the slide, even though there are no speakers. I learned many things from that slide, and I also got a motivation to make the slide.
In my slide, I put one photo in one slide and that made it difficult to understand. So, I thought to put several photos in one slide and make them pop up simultaneously while speaking. I found out it is very difficult to make a good slide, as we can not find the free photos that perfectly matches our image of the slide, and to make the audience understand the contents easily. Especially, making the slide for the story's summary was difficult because there was not much photo that matches the story.
I want to make this slide a best one in these two years.

June 4th 2020

Today, we were taught about the site that helps us understand the plot and the 3Bs of the book. Cliffs Notes and the spark notes were a site for teachers, giving information for what they need to teach to the students about the book, and thug notes was a youtube channel that explains the summary and the annalizes of the book for junior high school and high school students.
I thought these sites are use full for people like me, who are learning English as a second language. I can not understand the book perfectly just by reading the book and research the 3bs. However, I also thought there can be students who use these tools to deceive the teachers that they read the book, even though they do not. We can not say this is a bad thing as the students can have many more things to do and did not have time. Maybe, this can be a good tool for students who want to do what they want more than school homework.
To make the book review better, Cliff's notes and spark notes can support my work.

June 2nd 2020

Today, we were told about the many ways to have a presentation, such as Pecha Kucha, Ignite presentation, and lighting style presentation. I was late this day, so maybe there is a lack of some information. All of these ways of presentation had a limited time of one slide are there, and the presenter must speak all of the things they want to say in the limited time they have.
I did not know that there are many ways to have a presentation, so I was very interested about it. I thought it is difficult to speak all things in limited times, however, this makes the presenter eliminate the points that is not much important in the presentation, and this connects to a presentation that is clear, and easy to understand. Also, it can reduce the time, so it will be able to do many presentations in the little time.
I can imagine that it would be difficult for me to prepare a presentation, but I want to make my presentation a good one compared to last year.

Never Let me Go Chapter 4~8 (April 25th 2020)

In these five chapters, the relationship between the three main characters (Kathy, Ruth, and Tommy) became clear. Before, Kathy and Ruth was only a friend who is in the same group of a few of the girls. Ruth was kind of a leader, and Kathy was the underling. However, when Kathy rescued Ruth from the small lie coming out, and when Kathy lost her favorite CD, Ruth found a replacement for it, their friendship became stronger. Even though it was not like a best friend, but Kathy felt kind of superiority that she has a strong friend-Ruth. For Kathy and Tommy, they were more like a best friend. Kathy and Tommy talk about some topics that it occurred in Hailsham together. In the last part of chapter eight, Ruth and Tommy became a couple. I thought Kathy and Tommy will become a couple, so I was surprised about that.
Also, in these five chapters, the guardian, an adult who is in Hailsham became a significant character. We know that the students in Hailsham are different from normal people like us, and the guardian is the normal people so they are different from the students too. They teach many things to the students but there are some cases that communication between the guardian and the students does not match properly as they are different. Plus, the guardian is the person who tells us clues that how students are different from us.
The part that I remember the most is the part that Miss Lucy (she is a guardian) says to the children, "You've been told and not told." I think this connects to how the students are different from others. I predict that the students are born to have a donation to the normal people, and they are told about that vaguely, not cleary. This means they are actually told about that, but they do not really understand it properly. Also, when I look at this part properly, Miss Lucy says "That's what each of you was created to do". I had an impact that she used the word "created" instead of "born".
I am looking forward to read this novel more further.

Never Let Me Go Chapter 1~3 (April 18th 2020)

I chose a book called "Never Let Me Go" written by Kazuo Ishiguro who won a Novel Literary Prise. I had read this book in Japanese before, but I had the interest to know the differences between the original one, and the Japanese version.
The story started with Kathy(the main character) who is a career talk about the memory in Hailsham to the donor she needs to take care of. Hailsham is a place were many of the children live together with the guardian. Tommy was a boy who was bullied by people, and Ruth was a girl in the same group as Kathy. However, the bulling was almost disappearing at the end of chapter 3.
The most interesting part for me is in the last part of chapter 3, where the children went near to the madam who seemed that she is scared of the children in the Hailsham. The children wanted to know why is so scared of them and thought of a little strategy to walk in front of madam with a piece of mischief. However, madam scared at them as the children scare the spider and the children got hurt by the madam's reaction. It says, "the first time you glimpse your self through the eyes of a person different to you, it's a cold moment. It's like walking past a mirror you've walked past every day of your life, and suddenly it shows you something else, something troubling and strange". I think this case made the children realize that they are different from other people. Also, this part made me feel uncomfortable that the way I think about myself is different from what others think about me. It is a natural thing, but it sounds weird when I think about this calmly.

Final blog post

To be honest, I couldn't enjoy this class this year much. I am not good at having communication in English and using many functions on the computer. Of course, I have basic techniques of using computers such as typing, researching or making a presentation slide, but I had never used many functions like Zotero, and have a class using the computer all of the class time. There were many things we have to do that I had never experienced before, so first, I felt some of the uneasiness to be involved in this class. However, by learning in this class this, I received many of the techniques and skills that will be useful for being involved in society in the future. The skills I gained are presentation skills, writing skills and techniques of using the computer's function conveniently, which can be useful for living in modern society.
First, my presentation skills were developed by having many presentation practices in this class and getting much advice. We did the presentation for each semester (our group only did two), and that made me practice the presentation many times at home or at school. Practices made me have little confidence and improved my skills. Also, by listening to other people's presentations and having some advice from friends and Mr. Paterson, I learned many of the techniques. There were many of the techniques that I learned from it, but especially, I learned the technique of mapping the room and appealing what they did in the term. I was too desperate to speak what I need to say and I could not afford to move while presenting, but the good presenter always included the movement and used the space extensively. Also, the mouth person appealed what the group did and how the group grew in this term as the audience are listening at the presentation for two times. I was a heart in the group, but if there was a situation that I need to have a presentation on my own, I want to earn from them.
Second, my writing skills grew by writing essays, brochures, and blog posts. There were many basic rules that we had to follow, but by following these rules, I understood the correct way to write the essay. There were many elements that I never heard of, such as limitations. Also, as we wrote the blog post after every class, I made the habit to write a passage.
Lastly, I learned the way to use the convenient functions on the computer which I was not used at it the most. It was very difficult to master at it, and I am not mastering yet, but I think this is a technique that people need to gain to live in this society. I am not good at it yet, but I want to gain this skill to be involved in a society in a good way.
As a summary, I gained presentation skills by presenting in front of the class and listening to other groups presentation, writing skills by having a habit to write a passage after the classes, and the skill to use many functions in the computer which is a skill that it would be very useful these days. As a conclusion, I could not afford to enjoy the class, but I understood how this class was meaningful to all of us. There are tons of skills that I need to gain much more, so I want to improve many of my English skills after this year too. Thank you for your meaningful classes.

February 25th 2020

In today's class, we had a presentation from three groups. Our group did not have a presentation yet, so there were many things I could learn from the other group's presentation. There are two things I learned from the other group's presentation.
The first thing is, how including the movement in the presentation makes the audience concentrate on the presentation. Sara walked around the front of the classroom and made me concentrate on the presentation. Also, I listened carefully to the presentation in which the presenter used their gestures and moved their body to explain their issue. I thought including the body movements is an essential point to have a presentation, so I want to include movements in our group's presentation too.
Secondly, I thought it is important to appeal what the group did in this term, as almost all of us are going to listen to the same presentation for the third time. Is will be essential to make a change a little bit in the presentation to make the audience enjoy the presentation.
I learned these things by listening to other groups presentation, and I want to improve these things in our group's presentation to make it better.

Sorry, it seems that I forgot to push the publish button when I wrote this.

January 28th 2020

Today was a good class for me to improve my essay. As Mr. Paterson give advice to other students, I found some mistakes in my essay too. I felt I need to use more references and follow the basic techniques by writing an introduction and conclusion.
After this class, I checked my introduction to check the constitution of the thesis statement and the concluding sentences of each paragraph. There were some of the parts that I didn't include, such as limitations in the conclusion so it was a good chance for me to improve them.
Also, I recognized the importance of the reference. I liked the example of the best friend, that I thought I won't believe the person if they said my best friend hates me without any grounds. If we did not include any references in the essay, the essay will only be some one's imagination or some one's writing. to have a huge persuasiveness in the essay, references are essential.

January 27th 2020

In today's class, I was taught how to use Zotero by Mr. Paterson. Last class, I couldn't understand how to use it properly and I had problems at home, so it was very helpful for me. However, I can't say that I mastered using it, so I want to use it as I write an essay and master this convenient tool.
I also edited my essay too, as I only had four paragraphs. My structure of the essay was the introduction, issue one and the solution, issue two and the solution, and the conclusion. So, I changed to write the two problems first, and show the formula in one paragraph. Making the essay long made the essay a little bit better, but I also think this structure made the essay complicated. Also, finding references was also difficult, as my problem was not that measure. So, I found the references which show the importance of saving the privacy, or appealing how important to learn in a comfortable environment.
I would like to enhance my essay more, by using good references.

January 21st 2020

In today's class, we had a chance to enhance the brochure for groups and individuals. For me, I  forgot to write the three reasons in the introductions, so this time helped me to improve the essay.
Also, I used Zotero in this class, but I couldn't use it properly. I actually did not understand how to use it, so I would search for some one who can teach me how to use it.
The most difficult thing was to find good references for supporting my opinion and make the opinion persuasive. It took much time to find the references that I prefer, but I also have a feeling that how references are important.
I want to use good references and have a persuasive presentation and an essay.

January 20th 2020

Because we couldn't get the computers, Mr. Parterson introduced us, the app called Zotero. Zotero was a reference managing app, and I felt it was a high-performance app. Using this, we do not make any mistakes in writing references which we can not have any mistakes.
Writing references looks easy to write but actually, it is difficult for writing it perfectly. I still do not understand the correct way of writing references for websites and academic journal papers. I don't understand the differences between these two of the way for writing references. Also, many people think writing all of the references is exhausting. For people like this, this app will be a very convenient app. However, I think I won't use that much because I don't write many references yet, so maybe, it will be easier for me to type all of it in my own hands.
The interesting thing Mr. Paterson talked to us is, is the reason the BBC does not write the name of the person who wrote the article. The reason was if people research the name of the journalist, people can know the bias in the article. However, I think it is impossible to write an article without any bias, so it will be better for people researching the person and recognize the bias.
Also, we got introduced an app called 1Password. It was the app to memory all of the passwords for you in the online. However, I thought this app is meaningless because as people write the password on the app, maybe, the owner of the app can know about your password. Even though the owner says that they are not able to see the password, there is no evidence to believe the app. I think it is inconvenient a little, but it is better to make a notebook to write the password in it. It is not always good to depend on high-tech.
In today's class, I had a chance to think about high-tech and low-tech. I thought it is important to use convenient high-tech, but also essential not to depend too much on high-tech, and also accept low-tech.

January 14th 2020

Today was the first class this year, 2020. We were told to write a brochure for my self, by changing some parts of the brochure we wrote for the group. It was not that hard because we only had to change a little bit.
Also, the day before this day, I made the google slide better. It took a lot of time and it was hard but I had a good experience using a computer for a long time.
